Cough may be dry or bring up mucus, and it can be triggered by a cold, nasal drainage, smoke, allergy, reflux, or airway inflammation. The sound and colour of mucus do not diagnose the cause by themselves. Allergic Rhinitis, Acute Bronchitis, Asthma, and Acid Reflux may share cough as a symptom, while some people have more than one trigger.

A clinician may ask about timing, exposures, medicines, fever, breathlessness, wheeze, chest pain, and whether the cough is affecting sleep or activity.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoking and dusty or strongly scented air, and use a humidified environment if it feels helpful. Honey in a warm drink may soothe the throat for adults and children over one year. Follow label directions for any medicine and ask a pharmacist if you take regular treatment, are pregnant, or are caring for a child. Antibiotics are not suitable for every cough.

Get urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing blood. Seek medical advice for a worsening cough, fever with marked illness, repeated wheeze, dehydration, or symptoms that do not settle. A long-lasting cough may need evaluation for Chronic Cough, Bronchiectasis, or another condition.
