Cough and no appetite: what should you know?

Short answer
Cough with reduced appetite can accompany an illness, but dehydration, breathing difficulty, or ongoing loss of appetite needs medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Prioritise
- Fluids and small, easy-to-eat meals
- Watch for
- Reduced urination, dizziness, and worsening breathing
Why appetite may fall
Coughing, a blocked nose, throat soreness, nausea, tiredness, and changes in smell can make eating less appealing. A common cold or acute bronchitis may temporarily affect appetite. Reflux can cause cough and nausea, while asthma can make meals tiring if breathing is difficult. Reduced appetite is more concerning when it continues, comes with repeated vomiting, marked weakness, swallowing difficulty, or unplanned weight loss. The cough itself does not identify one diagnosis.
Practical steps
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if advised, and choose small nourishing meals rather than forcing a large portion. Soft foods may be easier if the throat hurts. Rest and avoid smoke. Record urination, fluid intake, temperature, and changes in the cough. Ask a pharmacist before using cough medicines, particularly for a child or alongside other medicines.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to swallow fluids. Seek prompt advice for very little urination, dizziness when standing, repeated vomiting, coughing blood, chest pain, or appetite loss that is not improving. Children, older adults, and people with chronic disease can become dehydrated more quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Could the cough or another symptom be affecting my appetite? How can I maintain fluids and nutrition? Which signs suggest dehydration? Should my medicines, examination, or breathing assessment change?
