What should you know about cough and hives?

Hives are raised, itchy patches that can move or fade and reappear. A cough with hives may follow a food, medicine, insect sting, latex exposure, or another trigger, especially when symptoms begin suddenly. Allergic rhinitis can cause an upper-airway cough but does not explain every episode of hives. Asthma may cause cough, wheeze, or chest tightness; acute bronchitis and a common cold can cause cough with a rash from infection or a medicine. Chronic cough, bronchiectasis, and bronchiolitis have different patterns and need assessment when symptoms persist.

Stop exposure to a suspected trigger and keep a note of what happened, including foods, medicines, stings, and timing. Do not give a new medicine unless a healthcare professional or pharmacist advises it. If symptoms are mild and breathing is normal, a pharmacist can advise about an antihistamine suitable for the person. Avoid scratching, smoke, and strenuous activity while monitoring closely. Anyone with a prescribed emergency allergy plan should follow it.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; wheezing; faintness; confusion; repeated vomiting; or rapidly worsening hives. These can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice for a first episode, a cough with chest tightness, symptoms after a new medicine, or hives that keep returning. Do not wait for a rash to become extensive before acting on breathing or circulation symptoms.
