What should you know about cough and headache?

A common cold, COVID-19, or allergic rhinitis may irritate the nose and throat while pressure from congestion contributes to head pain. Chronic sinusitis can cause facial pressure and a cough from mucus draining into the throat. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can add headache, thirst, weakness, dizziness, or nausea. A forceful cough can briefly increase pressure in the head, making pain more noticeable. The symptoms do not identify one cause by themselves; fever, nasal symptoms, breathing changes, exposure history, and how quickly the headache began help guide assessment.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and avoid smoke, dust, and strong fragrances. Warm drinks or honey may soothe an irritated throat for adults and children over one year. Saline nasal rinsing can help clear mucus when congestion is present; use safe, prepared water for the rinse. Follow the label for any pain or fever medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another condition, or take regular medicines. Note the cough type, temperature, triggers, and whether the headache follows coughing.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, a sudden severe headache, weakness on one side, or a new rash with fever. Arrange a clinical review if the cough is worsening, the headache is persistent or unusual for you, fever does not settle, or symptoms follow significant heat exposure. People with weakened immunity, pregnancy, or serious long-term illness should seek advice sooner.
