Cough after vaccination: what should you know?

Most injected vaccines do not place material into the airways, so a new cough soon afterwards is not automatically a direct vaccine effect. A viral illness may have started before the appointment, or throat dryness, post-nasal drainage and reflux may irritate the cough reflex. Cough can also occur with conditions such as Common Cold, Acute Bronchitis, Allergic Rhinitis or Asthma. A vaccine-related allergic reaction is uncommon but can cause sudden breathing difficulty, throat tightness, wheeze, facial swelling or widespread hives rather than an isolated mild cough.

Record when the cough began, which vaccine was given, and whether it is dry or brings up mucus. Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke and use a humidified room if it feels soothing. Do not stop prescribed medicines or take an antibiotic solely because the cough followed vaccination. If symptoms continue, worsen, or interfere with sleep, arrange a clinical assessment; mention asthma, allergies, reflux and recent exposure to respiratory illness.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, faintness, confusion, throat or tongue swelling, or rapidly spreading hives after vaccination. Arrange prompt medical review for chest pain, coughing blood, a high or persistent fever, dehydration, or a cough that is steadily worsening. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with lung or immune problems may need earlier advice even when symptoms seem mild.

Ask whether the timing suggests an infection, airway irritation or an allergic reaction; whether you need an examination or testing; which cough treatments fit your age and medicines; and whether any future vaccine precautions are needed.
