What should you know about copper spiral coil?

The term spiral describes the way people may picture the device, but modern copper IUDs have a small frame rather than a simple loose spiral. A clinician places the device through the cervix. Copper affects sperm locally, reducing sperm movement and making fertilisation difficult.

Because it is hormone-free, it does not provide the hormone-related effects associated with hormonal contraception. Period bleeding and cramps can increase for some users. The device has thin threads through the cervix for position checks and removal.

Discuss your periods, pelvic health, pregnancy possibility, and contraception preferences before fitting. The clinician can explain the examination, insertion sensations, pain-relief choices, and expected recovery. Tell them if you have unexplained bleeding or symptoms of infection.

After insertion, use the follow-up plan provided. Notice whether pain settles or worsens, whether bleeding is unusually heavy, and whether discharge develops a strong smell. A copper IUD does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Arrange prompt review for severe or persistent pelvic pain, fever, faintness, unusual-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or threads that are absent or suddenly different. Sudden severe pain warrants urgent care.
