What should you know about copper iud heavy bleeding?

A copper IUD acts inside the womb without releasing hormones. The local response can make periods heavier, longer, or more crampy, particularly soon after insertion. Heavy bleeding can also have another cause, such as pregnancy, infection, a displaced device, or a gynaecological condition, so the timing and pattern matter.

Record when the bleeding began, whether it is continuous or period-related, how often you change menstrual products, and whether you have pain, fever, discharge, weakness, or dizziness. This information helps a clinician decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Contact the fitting clinic if bleeding is interfering with daily life, does not settle, or differs sharply from your usual period. Ask which pain relief is safe for you; some medicines are unsuitable with certain stomach, kidney, bleeding, or pregnancy conditions.

Do not remove the IUD yourself. Use the threads only as the clinician taught you, and report a change in their length or a device that seems to be coming out. If you want a method less likely to increase bleeding, discuss alternatives and the trade-offs with your clinician.
