Short answer

A copper cooling coil is a copper intrauterine device placed in the womb to prevent pregnancy without releasing hormones.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the name means

Cooling coil is not the usual medical name for this method. People generally mean a copper coil, also called a copper IUD. A clinician places the small device inside the womb, where copper changes the local environment so sperm cannot move and fertilise an egg easily. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Cramping and changes to bleeding can occur after fitting. Periods may become heavier or more painful, particularly during the first few cycles. The device has threads that extend into the vagina; these help a clinician check its position and remove it when wanted.

What to do before and after fitting

Before fitting, tell the clinician about your periods, pelvic symptoms, pregnancy possibility, infections, allergies, and any medicines that affect bleeding. Ask how the procedure will feel and which pain-relief options are suitable for you.

After fitting, follow the advice you receive about activity and checking the threads. Keep a note of new pain, bleeding, fever, unusual discharge, or a change in the threads. A copper IUD can be removed by a trained clinician if you want a different method or want to try for pregnancy.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly for severe or worsening lower-abdominal pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, dizziness, or concern that the device has moved or come out. Seek urgent help for intense pain with faintness or a positive pregnancy test, because pregnancy with an IUD needs prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether a copper IUD suits your bleeding pattern and medical history, what to expect during fitting, how to check the threads, and which symptoms should trigger a same-day call.

Questions people ask

Is a cooling coil a different device?

Usually, cooling coil is an informal or mistaken name for a copper coil, or copper IUD. Confirm the exact device with your clinician.

Can a copper coil affect periods?

Yes. Heavier or more painful bleeding can happen after fitting, especially early on; persistent or troublesome changes deserve a clinical review.
