Copper coil aftercare

Cramping, pelvic soreness and light spotting are common after insertion and often settle as the body adjusts. Your next periods may be heavier, longer or more painful than before. The fitting service should explain when the device starts working, whether you need additional contraception, and how to identify its threads. Copper IUDs do not contain hormones; a Hormonal Coil has a different medicine and bleeding profile.

Rest if you feel sore, use the pain relief recommended for you, and track bleeding or pain so you can describe changes clearly. Keep the clinic’s contact details and your device information. If you choose to check the threads, wash your hands and use the method demonstrated by the clinician; never tug on them. Attend a planned review or contact the service if symptoms are not settling or you are unsure whether the coil is in place.

Get urgent medical advice for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, fainting, offensive discharge or a positive pregnancy test. Arrange an assessment if the threads disappear, feel much longer or shorter, or you can feel the plastic part of the device. These changes can have several explanations, so examination is needed rather than trying to reposition the coil yourself.
