What should you know about COPD GOLD stages?

Short answer
COPD GOLD stages describe the degree of airflow limitation measured by spirometry and help clinicians plan care alongside symptoms and flare-ups.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the stages mean
GOLD staging uses breathing-test results after a clinician assesses COPD. The stages are commonly described from mild through very severe airflow limitation. A stage is not a complete forecast of how you will feel: breathlessness, activity limits, cough, wheeze and previous flare-ups also shape the assessment.
Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly. The result is interpreted with your history, examination and response to treatment. Symptoms such as [Cough](/symptoms/cough/), [Wheezing](/symptoms/wheezing/) and [Coughing Up Phlegm](/symptoms/coughing-up-phlegm/) can occur at different stages.
How to use the result
Ask the clinician to explain your spirometry result, symptom pattern and flare-up history together. Attend a [Chronic Disease Review](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/chronic-disease-review/) so inhaler technique, activity, vaccinations and an individual action plan can be checked.
If you smoke, a [Smoking Cessation Programme](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/smoking-cessation-programme/) can support stopping. Avoiding smoke and irritants, pacing activity and taking prescribed inhalers as directed may help you manage daily breathing.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or difficulty speaking because of breathing. Contact your healthcare team promptly when cough, phlegm, wheeze or [Chest Tightness](/symptoms/chest-tightness/) is clearly worse than your usual pattern.
Questions for your doctor
Which spirometry findings place me in this stage, and how do my symptoms and flare-ups change the plan? What should I do if my breathing worsens? When should my test or review be repeated?

Questions people ask
Does a GOLD stage describe how I feel every day?
Not by itself. Symptoms and activity limits can differ between people with the same airflow stage.
Can my stage change?
Your measured airflow and overall assessment can change, so reviews help keep the care plan appropriate.
