Short answer

A convulsion with a raised temperature may be a fever-related seizure, but serious infection or another trigger must be considered.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

During the event
Protect the head and keep the mouth clear.
Afterwards
Place the person on their side and monitor breathing.
Assessment
A first convulsion needs medical review.

What it may mean

Fever can temporarily make the brain more excitable, particularly in young children. The person may stiffen, jerk, lose awareness, or be sleepy afterwards. The temperature itself does not tell you why the seizure happened. Causes of fever can include an ordinary infection, while meningitis needs urgent attention when fever occurs with severe headache, a stiff neck, unusual drowsiness, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Low blood sugar and alcohol withdrawal are other possible seizure triggers.

What to do during a convulsion

Move hard or sharp objects away, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and note when the movements begin. Do not restrain the person, put anything in the mouth, or give food, drink, or medicine until they are fully awake. When the jerking stops, place them on their side and watch their breathing. Do not try to cool them with a cold bath. If prescribed rescue medicine is available, use it only as directed.

When urgent help is needed

Call emergency services if the convulsion lasts more than a few minutes, repeats without recovery, causes a breathing problem, follows a serious injury, or occurs in water. Seek emergency care for a first seizure, a child who is difficult to wake, or fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, persistent vomiting, or a non-fading rash. Even when the person recovers quickly, arrange medical assessment to identify the fever source and review whether further testing is needed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may have caused the fever, whether the event fits a fever-related seizure, how to manage future temperatures, and which warning signs should prompt emergency help. Share the duration, movements, breathing changes, recovery, medicines, and any recording made from a safe distance.

Questions people ask

Should you put something in the mouth during a convulsion?

No. Keep objects and fingers out of the mouth because they can cause injury or block breathing.

Can a fever-related convulsion happen again?

It can recur with another fever, so ask a clinician for an individual action plan and clear emergency thresholds.
