What should you know about convulsion in infant?

A convulsion can involve loss of awareness, stiffening, rhythmic jerking, unusual eye movements, or sleepiness afterwards. Fever may accompany an infection, but the fever alone does not identify the reason for the seizure. Tell the clinician about the temperature, illness symptoms, medicines, injuries, feeding, and recovery.

Clear hard objects away, cushion the head, turn the person onto their side when possible, and watch breathing. Time the event. Do not restrain movements, put fingers or objects in the mouth, or offer food, drink, or medicine while awareness is reduced. Stay nearby as the episode ends.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, blue or grey colour, an episode that continues or repeats before recovery, serious injury, or failure to wake normally. A first convulsion needs prompt medical assessment. Fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, repeated vomiting, marked drowsiness, or a new rash is especially urgent because meningitis is one possible serious infection.

Ask what may have caused the event, whether examination or tests are needed, how to record another episode, how to manage fever for comfort, and which specific signs should prompt emergency help.
