Short answer

Control oily skin with a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, daily sunscreen, and targeted treatment chosen for your skin’s cause and sensitivity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cleanse
Gently twice daily and after heavy sweating
Moisturise
Choose a light, non-comedogenic formula
Avoid
Scrubbing and harsh alcohol-based products

Why oiliness happens

Sebum is an oil made by glands in the skin. It supports the skin barrier, but excess sebum can leave shine, enlarged-looking pores, or blocked pores. Hormonal changes, genetics, heat, stress, and irritating products can all influence oil production. Oily skin is a symptom rather than a diagnosis; it may occur alongside acne, hormonal acne, or seborrheic dermatitis, which can also cause scale or redness.

A routine that helps

Wash gently twice daily and after heavy sweating, using lukewarm water rather than scrubbing. Choose products labelled non-comedogenic and avoid repeated alcohol-based toners, which may irritate the barrier. Use a light moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen even when the skin feels greasy. Introduce one active product at a time and stop if burning or persistent peeling develops. Severe acne or stubborn oiliness may need prescription assessment; isotretinoin is not suitable for everyone and requires careful medical supervision.

When to seek care

See a dermatologist if oiliness comes with painful deep spots, scarring, sudden hormonal changes, marked redness, greasy scale, or symptoms that do not settle with a consistent gentle routine. Prompt assessment can distinguish acne from seborrheic dermatitis and identify medicines or conditions that may be contributing. Seek advice before using prescription treatments if pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern fits acne, hormonal acne, or seborrheic dermatitis; which cleanser and active ingredient suit your barrier; and whether prescription treatment is appropriate. If isotretinoin is discussed, ask about monitoring, pregnancy prevention, side effects, and alternatives.

Questions people ask

Does moisturiser make oily skin worse?

The right light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can support the barrier without adding pore-blocking ingredients; skipping moisturiser may increase irritation.

Can oily skin be cured permanently?

Oil production varies over time, so management usually focuses on a tolerable routine and treatment of any underlying acne or dermatitis.
