What should you know about contrast anaphylaxis treatment?

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, severe allergic reaction that can affect breathing, blood pressure, skin, and the digestive system. After contrast used for imaging, warning signs can include wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, faintness, vomiting, or sudden difficulty breathing. Symptoms may develop quickly, and a person can become seriously unwell even without a previous allergy history.

A suspected reaction is treated as an emergency rather than watched at home. The exact contrast product, timing, symptoms, and other medicines should be recorded for future clinicians.

Call emergency services immediately and tell the imaging team or emergency dispatcher that anaphylaxis is suspected. If the person has a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector, use it according to its instructions without delaying emergency help. Keep the person lying down unless breathing is easier sitting, and do not let them stand or walk suddenly. Follow dispatcher guidance and stay with them until help arrives.

Hospital care may include adrenaline, oxygen, fluids, medicines for selected symptoms, and observation because symptoms can return. Do not rely on an antihistamine alone when breathing or circulation is affected.

Seek emergency care for any breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat tightness, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, confusion, or widespread reaction after contrast.
