Continuous cough and headache: what to know

A cough may accompany the Common Cold or COVID-19, while nasal inflammation from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can cause drainage, throat irritation and pressure around the face. A headache can also follow repeated forceful coughing, poor sleep, not drinking enough, or spending too long in heat. Dengue Fever is another illness that can include headache and should be considered with fever, marked body aches, nausea or a rash, especially after mosquito exposure. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause, and a cough does not by itself show that a serious condition is present.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances and dusty air. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat; use a humidified room if dry air worsens the cough. Note your temperature, how long the cough has lasted, whether it is dry or produces mucus, and whether the headache follows bouts of coughing. Stay home from close contact while fever or a suspected respiratory infection is present, and follow local testing or treatment advice when relevant. Do not start antibiotics without a clinician’s assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a sudden or severe headache, a stiff neck, weakness, repeated vomiting, coughing blood, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a prompt assessment if symptoms are worsening, fever persists, dehydration signs develop, or the cough continues without improvement. Heat exposure with heavy sweating, weakness or confusion needs urgent attention because Heat Exhaustion can progress.
