What should you know about continuous barking cough?

A barking quality often comes from swelling or irritation near the voice box and windpipe. Viral illnesses such as a common cold, bronchiolitis, or acute bronchitis can produce cough, while asthma may cause wheeze, chest tightness, or night symptoms. Allergic rhinitis and acid reflux can also irritate the throat. A cough that continues beyond the expected illness, returns repeatedly, or brings mucus may need evaluation for chronic cough or another airway condition. The sound alone cannot identify its cause.

Rest, sip fluids, and avoid smoke, vaping, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Keep the room comfortably humidified without placing a child near hot steam. Note when the cough began, whether it worsens at night or with activity, and whether there is fever, wheeze, hoarseness, or noisy breathing. Do not give a child an over-the-counter cough product unless a pharmacist or clinician confirms it is suitable for their age.

Get urgent help if breathing is hard, the lips look blue or grey, the person cannot speak or drink normally, the chest pulls in with breaths, or a high-pitched noise occurs while breathing in. Seek prompt assessment for a young child with a sudden barking cough, especially after choking, or for any cough with marked drowsiness. Arrange a clinical review when symptoms persist, worsen, or repeatedly disturb sleep.

Ask whether the airway sounds narrowed, whether an inhaler or another treatment is appropriate, and which changes should trigger urgent care. Mention exposure to illness, allergies, reflux symptoms, smoking or vaping, and any choking episode.
