What should you know about contagious mastitis?
Updated

Short answer
Mastitis is breast inflammation and is usually not contagious; it can cause a painful, swollen area and sometimes fever, so prompt care helps prevent worsening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Contagious?
- Usually not
- Common features
- Tenderness, warmth, swelling, and possible fever
What it means
Mastitis often develops when milk flow is disrupted and breast tissue becomes inflamed. Bacteria may contribute, particularly when the nipple is damaged, but ordinary contact with the breast does not generally spread mastitis to another person. A tender, warm, firm or red area may appear, with aching, chills, or fever.
Symptoms can overlap with a blocked duct or breast engorgement. Persistent swelling, a fluid-filled area, or worsening illness may indicate an abscess or another problem that needs examination.
What to do next
Keep milk moving comfortably by feeding responsively or expressing only as needed. Check the baby’s latch and position, avoid tight pressure on the breast, and use rest, fluids, and a cool pack for comfort. Gentle handling is preferable to deep massage, which can increase tissue irritation.
A clinician can decide whether antibiotics, pain relief, or drainage is appropriate. Do not share antibiotics or delay review because you are worried about passing the condition to your baby.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician promptly if fever, flu-like symptoms, redness, or breast pain is worsening, or if you are not beginning to improve with supportive care. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, confused, severely unwell, or notice a rapidly enlarging soft lump.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit mastitis or an abscess, whether breastfeeding and prescribed medicines are compatible, how to protect the nipple while it heals, and when an examination or ultrasound is needed. A lactation consultation can help identify latch or milk-removal problems.

Questions people ask
Can my baby catch mastitis?
Mastitis itself is usually not passed through ordinary breastfeeding contact. Get advice if your nipple is cracked or there is drainage.
Should I stop breastfeeding?
Many people can continue breastfeeding, but individual advice is useful when pain, infection, or an abscess is present.
