Short answer

Constipation after pregnancy often improves with fluids, fibre, gentle movement, and a clinician-guided treatment plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful basics
Fluids, gradual fibre, movement, and a regular toilet routine
Medicine check
Review iron, pain relief, and breastfeeding considerations

Why it may happen

Recovery can change bowel habits. Reduced activity, soreness around the pelvic area, fear of discomfort, changes in meals, and medicines such as iron or strong pain relief can slow stool movement. Straining is not the goal; softer stool and an unhurried toilet routine are more useful targets. Constipation is a symptom, not a diagnosis of a serious bowel condition. If it continues, a clinician can review medicines and consider causes such as an underactive thyroid or irritable bowel syndrome.

Practical relief

Sip fluids regularly unless your maternity or medical team has advised a restriction. Add fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, pulses, oats, or wholegrain foods, and pair extra fibre with fluids. A short walk, if your recovery allows it, can encourage bowel movement. Respond to the urge to go, use a comfortable foot support, and avoid prolonged straining. Do not start a laxative, herbal product, or suppository without checking whether it suits breastfeeding, recovery after birth, and your current medicines. Nutrition Counselling can help tailor meals if eating has been difficult.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, black or bloody stool, fever, or marked weakness. Seek advice if constipation does not settle, keeps returning, or began after a new medicine. Dehydration can make stool harder, so mention dark urine, dizziness, or very little urination. After birth, also report worsening wound pain or heavy bleeding to the appropriate maternity service.

Questions for your doctor

Could iron or pain medicine be contributing? Is a stool-softening medicine suitable while breastfeeding? How should I increase fibre if I have pelvic soreness? What symptoms would mean I need an examination?

Questions people ask

Can constipation continue after giving birth?

Yes. Changes in activity, diet, pelvic soreness, and medicines can keep bowel movements slow during recovery.

Should I take a laxative after pregnancy?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist to choose an option that fits your recovery, medicines, and breastfeeding status.
