Constipation and indigestion

Short answer

Constipation with indigestion can cause bloating and abdominal discomfort, but persistent or severe symptoms need clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Constipation signs
Hard stools, straining, incomplete emptying or fewer bowel movements
Indigestion signs
Upper-abdominal fullness, burning, belching or discomfort after eating
Seek prompt care
Bleeding, repeated vomiting, severe pain, jaundice or trouble swallowing

How the symptoms overlap

Constipation affects stool passage, whereas indigestion usually describes upper-abdominal fullness, burning, belching or discomfort after eating. Slow bowel movement can increase pressure and bloating, making both sets of symptoms noticeable. Large meals, low fluid intake, dietary changes and some medicines may contribute. Irritable bowel syndrome can cause bowel changes with pain and bloating. These symptoms do not identify one diagnosis on their own.

What may help

Keep a simple record of meals, stool changes and discomfort to identify patterns. Choose smaller meals, eat slowly and remain upright after eating. Drink regularly, add fibre gradually and walk gently if comfortable. Avoid suddenly taking several constipation or indigestion products together. A pharmacist or doctor can check interactions and advise whether an antacid, stool softener or other treatment is appropriate. Nutrition Counselling may help if particular foods repeatedly trigger discomfort.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt assessment for black or bloody stool, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, fever, jaundice, severe or localised pain, or a swollen abdomen. Urgent care is needed if pain is sudden and intense, you cannot pass stool or gas, or you feel faint. Book a routine review when symptoms recur, disturb sleep or continue despite sensible changes.

Questions for your doctor

Do my symptoms fit constipation, indigestion or both? Could a medicine or food pattern be contributing? Which treatment should I try first, and which warning signs require urgent review?

Questions people ask

Can constipation cause indigestion?

Bowel contents and gas can increase pressure and bloating, which may make upper-abdominal discomfort more noticeable, although other causes are possible.

Should I change my diet for both symptoms?

Smaller meals, slower eating, regular fluids and gradual fibre are reasonable starting points; adjust based on symptoms and seek advice if they persist.
