Constipation in Pregnancy: What to Do

Short answer
For constipation in pregnancy, drink regularly, increase fibre gradually, stay gently active, and ask a maternity clinician before taking any bowel medicine.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Start with
- Fluids, gradual fibre, comfortable movement, and an unhurried toilet routine
- Check first
- Laxatives, stool softeners, herbal products, and supplement changes
Why pregnancy can affect bowel movements
Hormonal changes can slow bowel movement, giving the colon more time to remove water from stool. Growing pregnancy-related changes later on, reduced activity, nausea, dietary changes, and iron supplements may add to constipation. Hard stools, straining, bloating, and incomplete emptying are typical features.
Constipation alone does not show that the pregnancy is unsafe. A clinician may look for other contributors when symptoms are persistent, including dehydration, irritable bowel syndrome, or thyroid disease.
Practical relief
Drink fluids at regular intervals and include fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, pulses, oats, and whole grains. Increase fibre step by step and pair it with fluids to reduce bloating. Gentle walking or pregnancy-appropriate movement may stimulate the bowel. Go when you feel the urge, use a comfortable posture, and avoid forceful straining.
Before using a laxative, stool softener, suppository, herbal product, or home remedy, check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist. If iron seems to be involved, ask whether the dose, formulation, or timing can be reviewed instead of stopping it yourself.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team if self-care is not helping, constipation keeps recurring, or you cannot manage your usual food and fluids. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, persistent vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, blood in the stool, faintness, or vaginal bleeding. Very dark urine and much less urination can indicate dehydration.
Questions to bring
Which bowel treatment is suitable at my stage of pregnancy? Could my iron or prenatal supplement be changed? How much fibre and movement are appropriate for me? Which pain, bleeding, or vomiting symptoms require urgent review?
