Short answer

Constipation during pregnancy mainly affects comfort and bowel function, causing hard stool, straining, bloating, or pain, while severe or unusual symptoms need maternity assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main effects
Hard stool, straining, bloating, discomfort, and possible haemorrhoid irritation
Supportive care
Fluids, gradual fibre, gentle movement, and a comfortable toilet position

What constipation can change

Hard stool and straining can cause discomfort, worsen haemorrhoids, and make daily activities or sleep harder. Bloating may add pressure and reduce appetite. Pregnancy hormones, iron supplements, reduced movement, changing meals, and pressure from the growing uterus can all slow bowel transit.

Constipation is a symptom and does not automatically mean that the pregnancy or baby is in danger. If symptoms persist, a clinician can check medicines, hydration, diet, and other possible contributors such as hypothyroidism or irritable bowel syndrome.

Reducing discomfort

Drink fluids regularly unless your care team has advised otherwise. Increase fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and nuts. Gentle pregnancy-approved activity can support bowel movement. Use the toilet when you feel the urge, allow time, and avoid prolonged straining; a footrest may improve comfort.

Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking a stool softener or laxative. They can choose an option suited to pregnancy and check interactions with iron or other medicines. Do not stop prescribed treatment or rely on unverified herbal products without advice.

When to seek help

Contact your maternity team if constipation is persistent, recurrent, or painful despite these measures. Seek urgent assessment for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a very swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, blood in the stool, fever, faintness, or dehydration symptoms. Pregnancy services should promptly assess vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, or reduced fetal movement.

Questions worth asking

Ask whether your supplements or medicines could be contributing, which bowel treatment is appropriate, and how to prevent recurrence. Tell the clinician about abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, hydration, and changes in pregnancy symptoms.
