Constipation and a late period

Short answer
Constipation and a late period can occur together because of pregnancy, stress, hormone changes, medicines, or conditions affecting the thyroid or bowel.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Period dates, pain, bleeding, and bowel changes
Possible explanations
Pregnancy can bring hormonal changes that slow the bowel, and a late period can be an early pregnancy sign, but constipation does not prove pregnancy. Stress, travel, changes in weight or exercise, breastfeeding, and hormonal contraception can also shift bleeding patterns. Hypothyroidism may cause both slower bowel movements and menstrual changes. Irritable bowel syndrome can cause constipation but does not itself establish why a period is late.
What to do now
If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat it or contact a clinician if the result is negative but the period remains absent. Drink fluids, increase fibre gradually, move gently, and avoid straining. Check medicines and supplements with a pharmacist before changing them or taking a laxative. Record the first day of the last period, usual cycle pattern, bowel changes, pain, and any bleeding.
When to seek help
Seek urgent care for a positive or possible pregnancy with one-sided or severe pelvic pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, or vaginal bleeding. Arrange medical review for persistent constipation, repeated missed periods, blood in stool, vomiting, fever, marked abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool or gas. A clinician may assess pregnancy, thyroid function, medicines, and bowel symptoms together.
Questions to bring
When should I repeat a pregnancy test or have a blood test? Could thyroid function, contraception, or another medicine explain both symptoms? Which constipation treatment is suitable if pregnancy is possible?
