Short answer

Constant vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration quickly, so replace fluids carefully and seek prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main risk
Dehydration and loss of body salts
Best first step

Onset, urine, fever, pain, blood, meals, and travel

What the combination can mean

Vomiting and diarrhea together often reflect inflammation or infection in the digestive system. Gastroenteritis, Food Poisoning, and Rotavirus Infection can cause repeated watery stools, cramps, nausea, and fever. Gallstones or Pancreatitis may cause upper abdominal pain with vomiting, while Migraine can cause prominent vomiting with headache or light sensitivity. Meningitis is uncommon but urgent when vomiting occurs with severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or a rash.

The main immediate concern is fluid and salt loss. Dry mouth, very dark urine, dizziness on standing, unusual sleepiness, or passing little urine can signal dehydration.

What to do now

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting settles, add bland foods gradually and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while infectious illness is possible. Do not take anti-diarrhea or anti-vomiting medicines for a child, during pregnancy, or with bloody stool without medical advice. Record when symptoms began, stool appearance, fever, pain, recent meals, travel, and medicines.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood or black material in vomit or stool, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, trouble breathing, or inability to keep even small sips down. Seek prompt review for signs of dehydration, persistent fever, repeated symptoms, or vomiting and diarrhea in an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a significant medical condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need fluid treatment, stool or blood tests, medication review, or assessment for abdominal causes. Mention reduced urine, recent antibiotics, travel, sick contacts, and any blood or severe pain.

Questions people ask

What if every drink comes back up?

Stop forcing large amounts and try tiny frequent sips. If these also cannot stay down, seek urgent medical care because dehydration can progress.

Should I take antibiotics?

Not routinely. Many causes are viral or toxin-related, and a clinician should decide whether testing or antibiotics are appropriate.
