What should you know about constant discharge from eye?

Watery discharge often accompanies irritation or allergy. Sticky or thick discharge, crusting on the lashes, redness, and discomfort can occur with conjunctivitis. It may affect one or both eyes. Symptoms such as itching, sneezing, light sensitivity, blurred vision, swelling, or pain give a clinician useful context, but discharge colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean crusts with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye, and avoid sharing towels, cosmetics, or pillowcases. Do not rub the eye or wear contact lenses while it is irritated. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating or allergy treatment is suitable.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, injury, a chemical splash, or swelling around the eye with fever. Arrange prompt review when discharge is persistent, symptoms are worsening, or a contact-lens wearer has pain or redness.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis, whether treatment is needed, and when contact lenses or eye cosmetics can be used again.
