What should you know about constant cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated, especially after not drinking enough. Cloudiness may also come from crystals, mucus, semen, vaginal discharge, or a change in the sample container rather than disease. A urinary tract infection can make urine cloudy and may also cause burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. Kidney infection can cause cloudy urine with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling unwell. Dehydration is one possible explanation, but the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice when the cloudiness appears and whether it follows exercise, sexual activity, a new medicine, or reduced fluid intake. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on the cause. Arrange a GP assessment if the change continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary discomfort. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and check for infection or other findings.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, or marked weakness. Blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, or severe pain also needs prompt assessment.
