Conjunctivitis and light sensitivity: what to know

Light sensitivity means ordinary light feels uncomfortable or causes you to squint or close the eye. Surface irritation from conjunctivitis may make bright light unpleasant, especially when the eye is watery. Strong, sudden, or worsening sensitivity is less typical of simple surface inflammation and can occur with corneal injury or inflammation inside the eye. The symptom should be judged with pain and vision changes, not in isolation.

Rest in softer indoor light, use sunglasses outdoors, and place a cool clean compress over closed eyelids. Do not rub the eye or wear contact lenses. Keep hands, towels, and cosmetics clean and separate. Lubricating drops may help surface dryness when a pharmacist or clinician considers them suitable. Avoid driving if vision is blurred or light makes it difficult to see safely. Do not cover a painful eye tightly or use unprescribed steroid drops.

Seek urgent eye assessment for significant or worsening light sensitivity, eye pain, reduced vision, a fixed or unusual pupil, nausea with severe eye discomfort, injury, or chemical exposure. Contact lens wearers should seek prompt advice for pain, light sensitivity, or marked redness. Arrange a GP consultation for persistent symptoms even when discomfort is mild.
