What should you know about conjunctivitis in chickens?

The conjunctiva is the delicate surface around the eye. Inflammation may make the eye red, swollen, watery or partly closed. A chicken may have sticky eye discharge, rub its face, avoid bright light, or become quieter than usual. Eye signs can occur with local irritation, infection, dusty housing, or a wider flock illness, so the eye alone cannot identify the cause.

Check whether one or several birds are affected, whether breathing sounds changed, and whether the bird is eating and drinking. Do not assume that every red eye has the same cause.

Separate the affected bird from the flock if practical, using clean equipment and washing hands after handling it. Keep bedding dry, reduce dust and improve ventilation without creating a cold draught. Gently wipe visible discharge with clean, damp gauze; use a fresh piece for each eye and do not share cloths between birds.

Do not use leftover human eye drops, household disinfectants, or antibiotics without veterinary direction. Record when the signs began and note appetite, breathing, droppings and any other affected birds. A veterinarian can decide whether examination, testing or treatment is appropriate.

Arrange prompt veterinary assessment if the eye is held shut, markedly swollen, cloudy, bleeding, or producing thick discharge. Seek urgent advice when the chicken has breathing difficulty, cannot eat or drink, is very weak, or several birds develop signs. Keep the bird away from other animals while arranging help and follow local veterinary guidance for flock illnesses.

Ask whether the pattern suggests an eye problem alone or a flock infection, whether the bird should remain isolated, and which cleaning method is suitable. Ask how to give any prescribed medicine, how long to monitor the eye, and what changes should trigger a return assessment.
