Conjunctivitis and sore throat: what should you know?

Some respiratory viruses can irritate the throat and the eye surface during the same illness. Conjunctivitis may cause redness, watering, gritty discomfort or discharge, while a sore throat can cause pain on swallowing and a dry or scratchy feeling. This combination does not by itself identify the exact virus or prove that the illness is bacterial.

Spread can occur through coughs, sneezes, contaminated hands and shared items. Eye discharge may also transfer infection between surfaces. Symptoms in one eye can spread to the other, especially when the eyes are rubbed.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Wash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, avoid sharing towels and do not touch or rub the eyes. Clean discharge with a fresh damp pad for each eye. A pharmacist can advise on suitable symptom relief. Antibiotic Treatment is not helpful for every cause, so do not start leftover medicine.

Seek prompt advice for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, worsening redness, or thick discharge. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, marked neck swelling, severe weakness or confusion.
