Conjunctivitis and contact lenses: what should you know?

Conjunctivitis irritates the surface lining of the eye. A lens can trap discharge and microorganisms against that surface, increase rubbing and delay recovery. Redness, watering, a gritty feeling and sticky discharge can occur. Contact-lens wearers also need assessment when symptoms are marked because corneal infection can affect vision.

Do not share lenses, cases or solutions. Throw away disposable lenses used shortly before symptoms began, and replace the lens case and solution as advised. Wash hands before and after touching your eyes.

Take out lenses as soon as symptoms start and use glasses instead. Clean eyelid discharge gently with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye. Use a separate towel and pillowcase, avoid eye makeup, and do not touch or rub the eye. Do not restart lenses simply because redness is improving; ask a clinician when to resume and whether replacement lenses are needed.

Arrange prompt medical advice for significant pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, a white spot on the clear front of the eye, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer that are worsening. Ask whether the pattern fits conjunctivitis or a contact-lens complication, when lenses can be worn again, whether your lens case and products should be replaced, and whether any treatment is needed. Antibiotic Treatment is not suitable for every cause.
