What should you know about a congested cough?

A cough may become congested when the airways produce extra mucus during a Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis. Allergic Rhinitis can cause drainage from the nose into the throat, while Acid Reflux can irritate the throat without a chest infection. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness. A cough lasting a long time, repeated chest infections, or daily mucus needs assessment for conditions such as Bronchiectasis or Chronic Cough. The colour of mucus alone cannot establish the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid tobacco smoke, vaping, dust, and strong scents. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. Follow label directions for any over-the-counter medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Arrange a clinical review if the cough is not settling, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or comes with wheeze, fever, or reduced exercise tolerance.

Get urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or sudden chest pain. Seek prompt assessment if you cough blood, feel unusually weak, or have worsening breathlessness. Children with fast or laboured breathing, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness need prompt medical attention.

Tell the clinician when the cough began, whether mucus is present, and what triggers it. Ask whether your chest needs examination, whether reflux or allergy could contribute, and what warning signs should bring you back sooner.
