What should you know about congenital heart failure symptoms?

When the heart cannot keep up with the body's demands, fluid may collect in the lungs or lower legs. Breathlessness may appear with activity or when lying flat, while a cough can be worse at night. Fatigue may make ordinary tasks harder. Swollen ankles and rapid changes in how tight shoes feel can reflect fluid retention. Palpitations may occur with an irregular rhythm such as Atrial Fibrillation. Hypertension and other heart conditions can contribute, but symptoms alone do not identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical review for new, persistent, or gradually worsening symptoms. Note when breathlessness occurs, whether you wake coughing, how far you can walk, and whether ankle swelling changes during the day. Bring a list of medicines and supplements. A clinician may check your heart and lungs, blood pressure, rhythm, weight, and fluid status, then arrange tests or a Chronic Disease Review. Do not change prescribed heart medicines without advice.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, or coughing pink frothy fluid. Seek same-day advice if swelling or breathlessness suddenly worsens, you cannot lie flat comfortably, or palpitations come with dizziness or chest discomfort.
