What should you know about conformal radiotherapy?

A planning scan maps the treatment area. A specialist team then chooses beam directions and calculates a personalised plan before treatment begins.

The planning images show the tumour or surgical area and organs that need protection. Small skin marks, a fitted mask or another support may help reproduce the same position at each visit. The treatment machine moves around you, but it does not touch you, and radiation cannot be felt as it is delivered.

Conformal describes the shape and planning of the beams; it does not specify one cancer or one schedule. Total dose and the number of visits depend on the tumour site, treatment goal, other therapies and tolerance of surrounding tissues.

Follow positioning, bladder, bowel, eating or skin-care instructions exactly, since they help place internal organs consistently. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for imaging checks before the beam is switched on.

Tell the radiotherapy team about pregnancy, implanted electronic devices, new medicines or difficulty holding the required position. Use only creams or dressings approved for the treated skin. Fatigue and local effects can build during a course, so report changes early rather than waiting until the final visit.

Call the treatment team promptly for uncontrolled pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, a rapidly worsening skin reaction, new weakness or numbness, or unexpected bleeding. The relevant warning signs vary by the body area treated, so keep the centre's contact instructions available.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, a seizure or sudden major neurological change. These symptoms require urgent assessment regardless of whether radiotherapy caused them.

Ask what area is being targeted, what the treatment is intended to achieve, how positioning will work and which nearby organs shape the plan. Clarify likely early and later effects, which symptoms warrant a same-day call, and how response or recovery will be checked after the course.
