What should you know about conch piercing keloid?

A keloid develops from an exaggerated scar response after the piercing injury. It may begin as a small thickened area and become firmer or broader than the original hole. The surface is often smooth, but colour and sensitivity vary between people.

A bump after piercing is not automatically a keloid. Irritation, allergic reaction, trapped fluid, or infection can also cause swelling. A clinician can assess whether the lump extends beyond the piercing site, whether there is heat or discharge, and whether jewellery pressure is contributing. Avoid diagnosing it from photographs alone.

Stop friction and do not twist, squeeze, pierce, or cut the bump. Keep the surrounding skin gently clean and ask a clinician or qualified piercer for advice before changing jewellery, especially while the channel is healing. Pressure from earbuds, helmets, or sleeping on that ear can keep the area irritated.

A dermatologist may discuss steroid injections, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or keloid removal surgery. The choice depends on the scar’s size, symptoms, skin characteristics, and previous treatment. Because a keloid can regrow after a procedure, follow-up and prevention measures are part of the conversation.

Arrange prompt assessment for increasing warmth, redness, pus, fever, worsening pain, rapid growth, bleeding, or swelling that spreads into the surrounding ear. Seek urgent help if severe swelling affects the ear canal or you feel unwell. These signs may reflect infection or another problem that needs timely treatment.

Ask whether the bump is a keloid, how to manage the piercing safely, whether jewellery should stay in place, which treatment fits its location, and what follow-up is needed to watch for regrowth.
