Short answer

Computer-related repetitive strain injury describes symptoms linked to repeated or sustained work demands, often affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, neck, or shoulder.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

RSI
An umbrella term for several load-related symptom patterns
Useful first change
Vary tasks and position before discomfort builds
Assessment priority
Persistent numbness, weakness, or loss of coordination

What computer-related RSI means

The term covers several possible problems rather than one single diagnosis. Long periods in one posture, frequent clicking or typing, forceful key use, awkward wrist angles, limited recovery, and a workstation that does not fit the user can all contribute.

Patterns behind pain and tingling

Symptoms may include aching, burning, stiffness, weakness, tingling, or reduced hand control. Their location and triggers help distinguish muscle or tendon overload from nerve irritation. Carpal tunnel syndrome can present with tingling in the thumb-side fingers, while cubital tunnel syndrome can affect the little-finger side of the hand.

Thumb-side wrist pain can occur with De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and outer elbow or forearm pain may fit tennis elbow. These conditions do not follow from computer use in every case, so persistent symptoms deserve an individual examination.

Changes that reduce strain

Alternate keyboard, mouse, voice, and non-computer tasks where practical. Use brief movement breaks before discomfort builds, relax the grip on the mouse, and keep frequently used items within easy reach. Adjust the chair and desk so the forearms are supported, shoulders remain relaxed, wrists stay near neutral, and the screen can be viewed without leaning forward.

Do not force stretches through tingling or sharp pain. A workplace ergonomic assessment can match equipment and task layout to your body and duties. Physiotherapy or exercise therapy may then address mobility, strength, nerve sensitivity, and a paced return to normal workload.

When to arrange an assessment

Seek clinical care if symptoms persist despite task changes, disturb sleep, repeatedly return, or affect grip and coordination. Earlier assessment is warranted for spreading numbness, dropping objects, visible muscle loss, or progressive weakness. Sudden arm weakness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, chest discomfort, or breathing difficulty is an emergency and should not be treated as routine RSI.

Questions for the assessment

Describe precisely which fingers or joints are affected, what tasks bring symptoms on, and whether they wake you. Ask whether the pattern suggests tendon, muscle, joint, or nerve involvement; which temporary work modifications are appropriate; and what findings would make further testing useful.

Questions people ask

Do I need a special keyboard for repetitive strain symptoms?

Equipment can help when it corrects a specific mismatch, but no single keyboard suits everyone. Start with task variation, relaxed hand use, neutral wrist position, and an assessment of how your whole workstation fits.

Should I stop using a computer completely?

Complete avoidance is not always necessary. Temporarily reduce or divide provoking tasks, use alternative input methods where available, and build activity back gradually as symptoms and function improve.

Can a wrist brace help?

A brace may help a diagnosed condition by limiting a particular movement or position, but the wrong type can add pressure or restrict useful movement. Choose one after clarifying which structure is irritated and when it should be worn.
