Vertebroplasty for a vertebral compression fracture

It is not automatically offered for every compression fracture. The clinician first checks whether the painful level, fracture timing, imaging, general health, and response to non-surgical care make the procedure a reasonable option.

Using imaging guidance, a specialist advances a needle through the back into the affected vertebral body. Medical bone cement is then delivered while its position is watched closely. The cement hardens within the bone to reinforce the fractured area.

Kyphoplasty is a related procedure that creates a cavity before cement is placed. Neither approach treats the underlying reason a bone became fragile, so assessment and management of bone health remain separate parts of care.

Give the treating team a complete list of medicines, allergies, previous reactions to anaesthesia or contrast, and any bleeding concerns. Follow the facility's instructions about eating, drinking, and which medicines to take or pause; do not change prescribed medication on your own.

Afterward, staff monitor the puncture site, movement, sensation, and pain before discharge. Follow the personalised guidance for wound care, lifting, driving, and resuming activity. Keep any planned follow-up for osteoporosis or another cause of reduced bone strength.

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, nerve injury, reaction to medicines, and cement leaking outside the vertebra. Seek urgent help after the procedure for new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or severe new back pain. Fever, increasing wound redness, drainage, or pain that continues to worsen also needs prompt review.

Ask what confirms that the fracture is the source of pain, why vertebroplasty is being considered now, and what improvement is realistic for you. Discuss alternatives, including continued non-surgical care and kyphoplasty, as well as the specific risks created by the fracture location, your medicines, and your health conditions.
