What should you know about composite skin graft?

A composite graft contains more than one tissue type, such as skin combined with cartilage or another supporting layer. The surgeon selects tissue that can restore both surface covering and shape in a small, carefully chosen area. It may be considered after injury, removal of a lesion, or reconstruction where contour and support matter.

The graft needs a healthy recipient bed and close contact with the wound so it can receive nourishment while healing. Suitability depends on the defect, location, blood supply, smoking status, medical conditions, and the donor site. Results vary between people and body areas.

Before surgery, provide a full medicine list and mention smoking, diabetes, circulation problems, allergies, and previous healing difficulties. Afterward, keep the dressing dry and undisturbed until instructed, protect the area from pressure, and attend every wound review. Do not apply creams or remove crusts unless the surgical team advises it.

The donor site may feel sore and can need its own dressing. Follow instructions about washing, activity, sun protection, and pain relief. Healing may be staged, and the surgeon can explain whether later revision or another procedure is a possibility.

Contact the team promptly for increasing pain, bleeding that does not settle with advised pressure, spreading redness, foul-smelling drainage, fever, a dressing that becomes soaked, or a graft that turns unusually pale, dark, or loose. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or sudden severe illness.

Ask why a composite graft suits the defect, where the tissue will come from, how donor and graft sites will be protected, which changes are expected, and when normal activity can resume. Ask how scarring and later contour changes will be managed.
