Some soreness, tiredness, bruising near the incision, and bloating can occur after surgery. Keyhole surgery can also cause temporary shoulder-tip discomfort from the gas used during the procedure. More serious problems may involve infection, internal bleeding, damage to nearby organs, a blood clot, or a reaction to anaesthesia. The risk and recovery pattern depend on the reason for surgery, the approach used, and your general health.

Take medicines exactly as directed, keep the wound clean and dry according to your discharge advice, and increase activity gradually. Gentle walking can support recovery when your team permits it. Check the incision for spreading redness, warmth, opening, or discharge. Keep follow-up appointments and ask before driving, lifting, exercising, having sex, or returning to work. Do not ignore a symptom that is steadily worsening rather than settling.

Seek urgent care for severe or increasing abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg. Wound pus, rapidly spreading redness, or feeling suddenly very unwell also needs prompt assessment. If the operation followed an ectopic pregnancy, new one-sided pain or dizziness should be treated as urgent.
