Complete Miscarriage Ultrasound: What to Know

Ultrasound may show an empty uterus after the pregnancy has passed, or it may show tissue or blood that needs clinical interpretation. A transvaginal ultrasound uses a slim probe near the cervix to create a clearer view of the uterus and lining. The result is considered alongside bleeding, pain, examination findings, and sometimes pregnancy-hormone tests. A single scan may not answer every question immediately, especially when the pregnancy was very early.

Follow the appointment plan given by your maternity or gynaecology team. If the uterus appears empty and symptoms are settling, you may need observation and a follow-up check rather than a procedure. If tissue remains, options can include waiting, medication, or surgical management; the choice depends on bleeding, infection concerns, scan findings, and your preferences. Ask when to repeat a test, how to manage discomfort, and when normal activities can resume.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, chills, or feeling suddenly unwell. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection, or another pregnancy-related problem and should not wait for a routine scan. Contact your clinician promptly if bleeding or pain is not improving, or if you are worried about your recovery.
