Can a common cold happen without a runny nose?

A cold may cause a blocked nose, sore throat, sneezing, cough, hoarseness or tiredness without visible nasal discharge. Nasal symptoms can also appear later or fade before the cough and throat irritation settle. The absence of a runny nose therefore does not by itself exclude a viral upper-airway infection.

Dry air, allergies, smoke and other irritants can cause similar throat or cough symptoms. Sinus problems may produce pressure and blockage rather than a continuously runny nose. A clinician considers the full pattern, duration and changes in symptoms.

Drink fluids, rest and use warm drinks to soothe your throat. Saline nasal measures may ease blockage, while avoiding smoke and other irritants can reduce coughing. Wash your hands and cover coughs. If you take regular medicines, ask a pharmacist before choosing a multi-ingredient cold product.

Arrange medical advice for breathing difficulty, chest pain, dehydration, severe or persistent throat pain, symptoms that worsen after initial improvement, or a cough that becomes severe. New facial pain, marked nasal blockage or severe earache can signal a need to check for sinusitis or middle-ear infection.
