What should you know about common cold wheezing?

How the structures involved in Common Cold differ from normal

Short answer

Wheezing with a common cold can reflect narrowed or irritated airways, so breathing effort and other symptoms should guide medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the sound

Wheezing is a high-pitched whistle, often heard when breathing out, caused by air moving through narrowed passages. A cold can inflame the airways or increase mucus, and this may bring out wheezing in someone with asthma or another airway condition. Wheezing is different from noisy breathing caused only by a blocked nose. Cough, chest tightness, fast breathing, or breathlessness makes the symptom more significant. A cold can also be followed by acute bronchitis, while children with croup may have a harsh cough and noisy breathing.

What you can do now

Sit upright, rest, avoid smoke and strong scents, and take small regular drinks. If a clinician has prescribed an inhaler or other airway medicine, use it according to your personal action plan. Do not borrow another person's inhaler. A pharmacist or clinician can check whether a cough or cold product is suitable, since some products may be inappropriate for children or people with other conditions. Note when the wheeze occurs and whether it follows activity, lying down, or medicine.

Breathing warning signs

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, collapse, confusion, or visible pulling in of the ribs or neck while breathing. Seek same-day medical advice for new wheezing, worsening wheeze, chest tightness, rapid breathing, or poor response to a prescribed reliever. A baby or child with noisy breathing, reduced drinking, unusual sleepiness, or struggling to breathe needs prompt assessment.

What to discuss

Ask whether the sound is wheezing or upper-airway congestion, whether asthma or another airway problem could be involved, and how to use your prescribed reliever during future colds.

Questions people ask

Is wheezing the same as a blocked nose?

No. A blocked nose causes upper-airway noise, while wheezing usually comes from narrowed lower airways in the chest.

Should new wheezing during a cold be checked?

Yes. New or worsening wheezing deserves medical advice, especially with breathlessness, chest tightness, or a long-term airway condition.
