What should you know about common cold virus symptoms?

A cold often begins with a tickle in the throat or frequent sneezing, followed by a runny or blocked nose. Mucus may become thicker as the illness changes, and a cough can result from throat irritation or mucus draining from the nose. Headache, reduced appetite, muscle aches, and a mild fever can occur. Symptoms may be more disruptive at night because lying down can worsen nasal blockage. A cold symptom can overlap with sinusitis, acute bronchitis, croup, or a middle ear infection, so new or severe features deserve attention.

Use saline drops or spray for nasal blockage and sip warm fluids for throat comfort. Rest, keep the room comfortably ventilated, and use a tissue or your elbow for coughs and sneezes. Avoid smoke and other airway irritants while recovering.

Seek urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, have severe chest pain, become confused, faint, or cannot stay awake.
