Common cold types

One person may mainly have a blocked or runny nose; another may notice throat irritation, sneezing, cough, tiredness, or mild aches. Children can have more mucus and may develop ear discomfort. Symptoms can overlap, and their colour or intensity does not identify a particular virus.

A cold pattern is different from a complication or another condition. A cough that moves into the chest may need assessment for acute bronchitis, while facial pressure with persistent nasal symptoms can fit sinusitis. A barking cough and noisy breathing in a child require attention because croup affects the upper airway.

Track the main symptoms, encourage fluids, and use rest and simple comfort measures. Treat congestion or pain only with products suitable for the person taking them. A pharmacist can check age restrictions, pregnancy, allergies, and interactions. Avoid trying to identify the virus from mucus colour alone.

Reduce spread by washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact when feeling unwell. Repeated colds can happen because many viruses circulate; each episode still deserves attention to its actual symptoms.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, severe dehydration, or inability to swallow. Arrange an assessment if symptoms are worsening, chest pain develops, earache is intense, or facial swelling appears. A child with a barking cough, stridor, or struggling to breathe should be assessed promptly.
