Common cold and sneezing

A cold inflames the lining of the nose and increases watery mucus. Sneezing is a reflex that helps move irritants and secretions out of the nasal passages. It may occur with a runny or blocked nose, mild throat irritation, cough, and tiredness. It can also be triggered by allergies, dust, smoke, or dry air. Croup, sinusitis, and other infections have different features, so the full pattern matters more than sneezing alone.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow, then wash your hands. Dispose of tissues promptly and avoid sharing cups or towels while unwell. Saline nasal drops, warm fluids, rest, and avoiding smoke may soothe the nose. A pharmacist can explain whether an antihistamine or other treatment fits your symptoms. Check labels carefully when combining cold products so you do not take the same ingredient twice.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, do not begin settling, or return after improving. Seek advice for persistent facial pain, worsening blocked nose, earache, or a cough that becomes difficult to control. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, or severe weakness.
