Common cold rhinovirus: what it means

Rhinovirus can irritate the nose, throat, and nearby airways. This may cause sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, scratchy throat, cough, and tiredness. Different viruses can cause similar cold symptoms, so symptoms alone do not identify the exact virus. A cough may remain after nasal symptoms start settling because airway irritation takes time to calm. Rhinovirus is not the same thing as every illness that people call a cold, and severe symptoms deserve separate assessment.

Rest, drink fluids, and use warm drinks or soothing foods for throat discomfort. Saline nasal spray may help loosen mucus. Reduce spread by washing hands, ventilating shared spaces, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when you feel unwell. Do not start antibiotics for a suspected viral cold unless a clinician identifies a reason to use them. Check combination cold products carefully so you do not take overlapping ingredients.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening rather than easing, a cough becomes severe, or new ear or facial pain appears. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with asthma or other long-term conditions may need individual advice sooner.
