Common cold early symptoms: what to notice

A Common Cold may start with irritation in the nose or throat, followed by watery nasal discharge, sneezing and congestion. Some people notice tiredness, a mild headache or a cough as mucus moves down the throat. Symptoms can overlap with allergies and other respiratory infections, so the pattern and progression matter. A blocked nose does not by itself identify the cause. Symptoms that become more severe, affect breathing or fail to settle need a different assessment.

Rest, drink fluids and use simple comfort measures such as saline nasal spray, warm drinks or a humidified room. Wash hands regularly and avoid sharing cups or towels while symptoms are developing. If you need medicine for pain or fever, check the product and your health history with a pharmacist, especially during pregnancy or if you take regular medicines. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed for a diagnosed bacterial infection.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, or chest pain. Arrange clinical advice if symptoms are rapidly worsening, dehydration develops, fever persists, or a cough becomes severe. Facial pain with worsening nasal symptoms may need assessment for Sinusitis; a cough that persists or affects breathing may require evaluation for another respiratory condition.
