Dry throat with a common cold

Cold viruses can irritate the lining of the throat, making it feel rough, tight, or scratchy. A blocked nose may lead you to breathe through your mouth, which dries the throat further, particularly overnight. Coughing, indoor heating, smoke, and low humidity can add irritation. Mild dryness often appears alongside a runny nose, sneezing, or hoarseness. Severe one-sided throat pain, drooling, difficulty opening the mouth, or trouble breathing is not typical simple dryness and needs prompt assessment.

Take frequent sips of water and try warm fluids or sugar-free lozenges if suitable for you. Saline nasal spray can make nasal breathing easier, while avoiding smoke and alcohol-containing mouthwashes may reduce irritation. Honey can soothe adults and older children, but not babies. Use medicines only as directed and ask a pharmacist if you are pregnant, caring for a child, or taking other treatment. Rest and allow your voice to recover if speaking makes symptoms worse.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, swelling of the face or neck, confusion, or severe weakness. Contact a clinician if throat pain is intense, symptoms are worsening, dehydration develops, or the dryness persists after the other cold symptoms improve. New earache or marked facial pain can also require review.
