What should you know about common cold chest congestion?

A cold can increase mucus in the upper and lower airways. You may feel mucus moving when you cough, hear a crackling or rattling sound, or notice soreness from repeated coughing. A cough helps clear secretions, so suppressing every cough is not always useful.

Chest symptoms can also occur with acute bronchitis, asthma or another infection. The colour of mucus alone cannot establish the cause. New wheezing, breathlessness, high feverishness or symptoms that keep worsening deserve clinical advice.

Rest, drink regularly and avoid tobacco smoke, vaping and strong fumes. Warm fluids may soothe an irritated throat. Sleep with your upper body comfortably raised if drainage is disturbing rest. Ask a pharmacist whether an expectorant or other product is appropriate, especially if you take regular medicines.

Do not start antibiotics just because mucus is coloured or a cough is productive. Follow label directions and avoid combining several products with the same active ingredient.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or chest pain. Arrange prompt assessment if breathing becomes harder, wheezing is new, fever persists, or symptoms worsen after seeming to improve. People with asthma, COPD, heart disease or reduced immunity should seek advice early.
