An ECG is a tracing of electrical activity, not a picture of the heart’s valves or arteries. The result still needs interpretation alongside your symptoms, examination, medical history, and other tests. A normal tracing at one moment may not capture an intermittent rhythm problem, while an unusual pattern does not by itself identify every possible cause.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists, and ankles, and tell the operator about creams, lotions, or skin irritation. You usually lie still while small adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin. Relax your arms, breathe normally, and avoid talking or moving until the recording is complete.

Ask who will explain the tracing and when you will receive the result. If an electrode does not stick or the tracing is affected by movement, the operator may repeat that part of the recording.

An ECG appointment should not delay emergency care. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness on one side, or a sustained fast or irregular heartbeat with dizziness.
