Colonoscopy for men: what to expect

The procedure is performed in the same way for men and women. A flexible camera passes through the anus while sedation or pain-relieving medicine may be used for comfort. It does not examine the prostate directly.

A clinician may recommend the test because of bowel symptoms, a screening result, previous polyps, family history, or the need to check the bowel after treatment. The camera allows close inspection of the colon and rectum. Small tissue samples can be taken, and some polyps can be removed during the same visit.

Finding a polyp does not mean that cancer is present. Laboratory examination of removed tissue helps the clinical team decide whether follow-up is needed.

Follow the bowel-preparation instructions exactly. They usually involve a temporary diet change and laxative medicine that empties the colon, allowing the camera to see the lining. Tell the endoscopy team about blood-thinning medicines, diabetes medicines, kidney or heart conditions, allergies, and any previous difficulty with sedation.

Arrange transport home if sedation is planned, and follow the unit’s restrictions on driving, work, and important decisions afterward. Mild wind or cramping can occur as the air used during the examination passes.

Before the test, seek prompt assessment for heavy rectal bleeding, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or fainting. After colonoscopy, contact the endoscopy service urgently for severe abdominal pain, fever, persistent vomiting, a swollen rigid abdomen, breathing difficulty, fainting, or bleeding that is heavy or increasing.

A small amount of blood may occur after a biopsy or polyp removal, but the discharge instructions should guide what is expected for your particular procedure.

Ask why the test is recommended now, whether tissue removal is anticipated, which medicines need adjustment, what sedation is planned, and who will explain the findings. Also clarify when eating can resume, what symptoms should trigger a call, and whether a follow-up examination may be needed.
