Colloid goitre: what should you know?

The thyroid is a gland at the front of the neck that stores material used to make thyroid hormones. A colloid goitre develops when follicles enlarge and hold more of this stored material. The swelling may be smooth, uneven, or associated with nodules, and it can be visible or found during an examination.

Some people have no symptoms beyond a neck fullness. Others notice pressure when lying down, difficulty swallowing, a cough, voice change, or symptoms linked with altered hormone production. Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism are different thyroid-function patterns that may occur alongside a goitre and require separate assessment.

Book a GP Consultation for a new neck swelling or a change in an existing one. The clinician may examine the gland, ask about symptoms and medicines, and arrange a Thyroid Function Test. The result helps show whether the thyroid is producing an expected amount of hormone, but it does not describe every detail of the swelling.

Avoid pressing or repeatedly checking the area, which can make it sore. Record changes in size, swallowing, breathing, voice, energy, bowel habits, and heartbeat to discuss at the appointment.

Get urgent help for rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, or inability to swallow. Arrange prompt medical review for a persistent hoarse voice, new palpitations, tremor, profound tiredness, or increasing pressure in the neck.

Ask what the examination suggests, whether your Thyroid Function Test is needed or should be repeated, and whether the swelling is affecting your airway or swallowing. Ask how often it should be monitored and which symptoms warrant an earlier appointment.
